In the north of Mallorca, there’s a lightbulb moment waiting for visiting golfers.
At Club de Golf Alcanada near Alcudia, a mid-19th century lighthouse stands proud. It offers the kind of views which turn a fine golf course into a truly memorable experience.
Arguably, the best view is from the elevated 13th tee, where you hit down and towards the Bay of Alcudia with the towering structure away in the distance. But fantastic views are never far away at Alcanada with so many wow holes to enjoy with elevated tee shots and plenty of strategy and accuracy required to think your way around the course.
Owned by Hans Peter Porsche, the club is a Robert Trent Jones Jr-designed layout and there has been significant investment in recent times, thanks to a €700,000 renovation, which saw all 18 greens replaced two years ago.
Since the course opened in 2003, Alcanada has established itself as a top European golf destination and hosted the European Challenge Tour final in 2019 and will also host the PGA EuroPro Tour final later this year.
But alongside the course, the whole experience surpasses expectation with a relaxed vibe that runs through the fabric at Alcanada – a club that knows its roots but has added a modern touch in all the right places.
There are some nice extra touches too. The Lighthouse Bar allows golfers to enjoy a mid-round break for a chilled glass of something and a light snack, while the tradition and history are epitomised in the centuries-old Mallorca clubhouse – a 19th hole brimming with style.
The inviting sun terrace is the ideal spot to catch a few rays, enjoy some liquid refreshment and drink in those views all over again after the round.
Located around 45 minutes drive from Palma airport, the north of Mallorca remains relatively unspoilt in contrast to some of the mass tourism areas in other parts of the island.
It’s well worth the trip.
